In between shifting a house, working on three films (ready to hit the screens this year), and basking in the glory of winning a Filmfare Award award (critics category) for her first full-fledged role in Rock On!!, Shahana Goswami, sounds as cheerful as ever. When I think about the award, I feel flattered and touched, she says. When Shahana started out as an actor, she had no expectations.
I had different notions about the industry. Earlier commercial films required a different skill set and attitude which I could not have offered. Bollywood has seen rapid changes in the last five years. Now the industry complements my instincts as an actor, she points out.
For someone who had no training to do commercial films, small roles in Yun Hota To Kya Hota and Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd was a good enough beginning in films. My focus has always been on playing interesting parts in unusual films. In future, I wish to work with directors like Mani Ratnam and other filmmakers like him, shares Shahana.Dodging rumours of a tiff (for the lead role in Jashn) with Anjana Sukhani, Shahana claims she never craves to play lead roles. The length of the role does not matter to me, its depth does. There have been times when people have approached me to play lead roles, but I have rejected them since these were not challenging enough for me.A Delhi girl settled in Mumbai now, Shahana claims that she has always been filmi right from her childhood and goes on to add how she would always entertain people, enact a scene in a caricaturish way and dance in front of the mirror. The joy of acting is when you are playing a certain character and are able to express your emotion. It becomes a cathartic process.Shahana sure has a life apart from work and shares it with assertive candour. The foodie that she is, she enjoys eating out at street food joints when she can. Quiz her about her relationship with Milind Soman and she admits that, Milind and I are foodies. Eating is one activity that we both enjoy doing together. It is an important part of our lives. We love each others company and so far the going has been great for the two of us.Her me time involves relaxing at home sketching, reading, solving crossword puzzles and catching up with close friends. She says, I have done Odissi dance for 10 years now. And I hope to learn a western dance form or swimming. I have also wanted to sing. While I am not pursuing it right now, I hope to do it some day. Many years down the line, I would also want to write and direct too.
